Hi Matt, I do have to agree that the gov't needs to do a housecleaning of the bad apples. That's a given. However, in that housecleaning, there will be a lot of good apples getting disadvantaged. For example, one fellow in Beijing is working there legally. The PSB went to talk to his landlord to find out about the guy, and now his landlord is kicking him out, thinking that he's one of the bad ones. I fear that there will be more cases similar to this. Was it really an attack on a fallen member of an exclusive society, or was it a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time? People coming to China need to be warned about this kind of behavior. Granted, China is not the only country with people who proposition you in bars. Visitors should have some kind of "people smarts" before they start venturing out, no matter what the country. There is a lot of misinformation about Chinese people (women in particular) floating about in places like the UK, Canada, and the US. People have to learn that what they hear and what is real are generally two very different things. I can still remember my father telling me that everybody in China knows kung fu, and that they will throw you in jail if you spit on the street. It's stereotyping and believing those stereotypes which get first-time visitors into trouble.

Hi Chris, It wouldn’t surprise me if that English guy was set up. The issue I think is that this video has credibility because (unfortunately) there are too many foreigners in the bars and nightclubs across China acting like this. Unfortunately, we have a poor image problem a lot of (I hate to say this) “our” community is doing nothing to improve. When he was being beaten up, I didn’t see it so much as racist, but as an attack on a fallen member of an exclusive society (again, I hate to say this). If so, I think the attackers showed restraint...if it was a lecherous local official in that situation, he would have suffered far worse! I think we have to accept the uncomfortable fact that too many of us are coming over to China and acting like arseholes. The sooner the Chinese government kick these jerks out of their country...the better for all of us! I agree with your concern about Nationalism here...it is concerning, and something that could easily get out of control very very quickly. I see it as a far bigger problem than all the other problems we’re not supposed to talk about. But still...China is far more civilized that my beloved Australia, where foreign students are bashed and robbed once they’ve been abused and insulted. So... I’d say China is a much safer place for a foreigner to be in than Australia. 8)
